Confession time: I LOVE PINTEREST. I can easily waste hours on a Sunday evening scrolling through recipes, inspiring my home decor and fuelling my wanderlust, and there’s something so satisfying about adding to my boards (shameless plug: if you enjoy this blog, you might also like my Hello Hygge board).
One of the questions I’m asked most frequently is how to bring hygge into the home. A lot of people think that hygge needs to look like all the amazingly chic, white, crisp Scandi homes we see on the internet, but that is absolutely not the case! Hygge comes in all shapes, sizes and colours, and I’m going to show you how many shades of hygge there really are in the home. Let’s take a look at some of the key interiors trends on Pinterest as identified by Inspired Wallpaper and find out many ways there are to make your home hyggeligt. And if you read to the end, you’ll find out how I can help you create your own Pinterest-worthy hygge home with £75 to spend on wallpaper…
1. Country living
When I think of country living, I tend to think of rustic woods, beams, exposed brick and threadbare rugs. This massive bed looks so snug covered in blankets and pillows, and with central heating not really being ‘a thing’ in the countryside, it looks like the perfect spot for Sunday morning hygge before a bracing walk in the rain.
I love this unbelievably chic freestanding copper bath, and the little basket of towels would fit right in at any country pile. I’m hoping the rug is faux fur – imagine sinking your feet into that after a hot bath! Candles are a staple in any country home, whether it’s a crumbling cottage or a grand stately home – if the electricity cuts out, these will be absolutely essential. And of course, a candle or two never hurts when it comes to hygge, right?
2. Lavish luxe
The two things that spring to mind when I think of luxe interior decor are 1) bold colours and 2) texture, and this room delivers on both of those fronts. I know there’s a lot going on, but it goes to show that you absolutely don’t need to live in a showroom to hygge at home. This room lends itself well to nesting, with lots of places to get cosy and relax. This would look so inviting in winter in flickering candlelight – I’d love to curl up in that chair next to the fire with a book and a cup of tea on a cold December night.
I’m eeeever so slightly sold on this Tritone Marone Damask Wallpaper. This for me is a perfect example of how you can create a cosy, hyggeligt space without going for the bright, white Scandi look. It’s quite opulent and intricate, and I think this would be a gorgeous dramatic backdrop to dark wood furniture, velvet upholstery and lots of plush cushions and throws. Hygge is for everyone, even drama queens!
3. Perfect pastels
As you may well know, pale pink is my absolute favourite colour, so I naturally gravitate towards these pretty blush tones. I don’t think pink is very often associated with hygge, but for me it’s the number one colour that makes me happy, which is why I’d love to sprawl out in this pink and white bed. Give me a Nigella Lawson cookbook, a glass of wine and a string of tiny fairy lights and I’d be happy as a clam here.
And speaking of colours rarely associated with hygge, how often do you see blue featured in the classic ‘woolly socks in front of the fire’ stock images the media uses to demonstrate the concept? But this pastel blue lake house SCREAMS summer hygge to me. Imagine relaxing in here on a breezy summer morning, enjoying pancakes for breakfast and planning your walking route for your day at the lake with your family. I don’t know about you, but I’d visit tomorrow given half a chance.
4. Scandinavian hygge
I love everything about this pared-down, white wooden cabin. It’s completely unachievable for a naturally messy magpie like me, but it just goes to show that you don’t need lots of ‘things’ to be able to hygge. This is a very functional space (in fact, I think this room represents lagom pretty well!), but still beautifully cosy – there’s a throw, a couple of cushions, a couple of rugs and that lovely minimalist rocking chair. How much do you want to be sitting in that chair right now looking out over the snowy landscape?
If you want to take the Scandi concept even further, you could opt for this gorgeous Stockholm Gold Geometric Wallpaper. I loooove the eye-catching pattern (maybe on a feature wall rather than an entire room, though it depends on how bold you’re feeling!), and the metallic gold will help reflect light, making it ideal for smaller spaces. It comes in several colours, but the gold will go well with any warm neutral colour scheme – ideal for the cosy vibe.
5. Terrific tiles
The kitchen is the heart of the home
I can never get enough of these deep, opulent teal tiles. It reminds me of an enchanted woodland lake, and the addition of the zingy green foliage stops it all from getting too gloomy. Bringing nature inside is great for home hygge, and this mismatched patchwork of greenery really works for me. The warm copper and wood warms the whole colour scheme up a bit, and a kitchen like this would absolutely brighten up my mornings.
And by the way, did you know that you can get ’tiles’ as wallpaper? I certainly didn’t, but check this out – this is the beaut London Tile Aqua wallpaper, and it’s PERFECT for bringing a splash of colour into a kitchen or bathroom without the expense and effort of real tiles. It’s very easy to fall into the trap of ‘all neutral everything’ when you’re decorating, and people tend to play it safe and functional in kitchens and bathrooms. But for the two rooms everyone uses every day, why not do something a bit different and put your own stamp on it?
